  • Why 80 per cent of the links your have built will disappear in 6 months?

Date: 2010.04.30 | Category: expert seo, seo expert | Response: 28

However scary this may read, it’s true, and contrary to the feelings that the title of this post may have created, this is actually a blessing in disguise for those who have been involved with “value driven” SEO strategies.

Let me explain. The days of scrounging the net for links from every website/ community possible is over. And thank God for that! Webmasters and SEO experts who have been following such strategies will find that most of the links they are building are getting removed from search indexes every couple of months. To compensate for those, more links are built, and the deadly cycle continues with no real value being created.

Are you (or your SEO expert) just wasting your money and time on links that are getting deleted?

    1. If your SEO Strategy is not in alignment with the new link variables like – consistency, relevancy, diversity, participation, progression and “age” of links, then your money is going down the drain and no lasting value is being created.

    2. If your SEO strategy is not creating “consistent value” for the users, its money going down the drain.

    3. If your SEO strategy is not making that value – “highly visible”, its money going down the drain.

If you answered YES, to the above statements, then you may be one of the 80 per cent who is getting affected because you chose the wrong SEO strategy!

If you are applying any of the below strategies, you are wasting your hard earned money:

    - Links built from websites that are not relevant to your business – lack of relevancy

    - Links built randomly over period of time – lack of consistency

    - Links built at staggering pace and then stopping, and then start again – lack of progression

    - Links built on sites where you never return – lack of participation

    - Links built across social bookmarking sites with no up votes (single voted links are normally weeded out) – lack of participation

    - Links built from websites that have little link power to pass on – age of links

    - Links built across a few communities only – lack of link diversity

    - Links built with no clear weekly/ monthly strategy ahead – lack of proper SEO strategy

    - Links built over 6 months and then all link building is stopped – lack of consistency

    - Links built by syndicating one article across 100 article sites, or one link across 100 social bookmarking sites – lack of participation

    - Links are built only to the home page of the website

    Why is this so?

Every couple of months the search engines updates their indexes, and weak links (not in alignment with the new link variables) or links with no power are normally tossed in the dustbin. So do the social bookmarking sites and other sites where you were just a one time visitor.

How to ensure that 100 per cent of your links are Permanent!

    >> Build a SEO strategy fosuced on creating value and in alignment with the New Link Variables

    1. Consistency

Ensure you have a SEO strategy in place that is consistent over a period of time. The weekly syndication and promotion strategy is an example of that. Each week you create new content (focused around a keyword you are targeting) for your Blog. Syndicate that content each week across select and relevant article sites. Promote that content across select and relevant social bookmarking sites. Get users to up-vote that content making the story hot. All this continues each week consistently.

    2. Relevancy

Ensure your SEO strategy is targeting relevant sites, communities, blogs etc. It’s better to get a few good links from relevant sites than to get many links from irrelevant sites. Relevant sites are external sites and communities which are similar/ related in nature to your business, products and services.

    3. Diversity

Ensure your SEO strategy is targeting a diverse set of web, user and social communities. It’s better to get links spread evenly across a diverse mix of communities – article sites, social bookmarking, social media, blogs, RSS feeds, PR sites, forums, web directories, video sites etc, than to get most of your links from just two or three of these communities.

    4. Participation

Ensure your SEO strategy is focused around genuine participation in the communities you are building links from. Don’t be a one time visitor. Be selective in the sites you choose, and participate in them to get back link power. Get involved in the communities by participating consistently, and get others to up vote/thumbs up/ comment/ review your content increasing the level of participation. The link power is passed by virtue of participating in a select site over a period of time by creating and sharing content with that site.

    5. Progression

Ensure you SEO strategy is building links in a progressive manner. This means that search engines prefer a link building profile that is steadily growing over a period of time rather than a link profile using sporadic link building every couple of months. A health graph of link acquisitions shows consistent growth in the number of quality links each month.

    6. Age of Links

Ensure your SEO strategy is focused on building links that are meant to be in place permanently. This means that the SEO value of a good link is not passed immediately but rather is passed over a period of time which could range from two to three months. So any links that are temporary in nature (refer to any of the wrong link building strategies above in this post) will be weeded off in time. Focus on creating links that will be permanent.

So ask yourself (and your Expert SEO) about the link building strategies you are applying to ensure that all the links that are being built are permanent, and in your SEO strategy is in alignment for success.

  • SEO for the CEO | Why most SEO strategies fail to deliver?

Date: 2010.04.28 | Category: expert seo, seo for ceo, seo strategy | Response: 5

There are many reasons why a SEO strategy fails to deliver.

In this post I ponder over 10 primary reasons why your SEO strategy could miss its mark.

    1. No long term perspective

Most SEO strategies are defined for a limited period of time like 6 months to a year. Many clients feel post that period there will be no SEO needed, or at max, some maintenance to keep up the rankings. It’s this short term thinking that gets website owners caught up in a wrong SEO strategy with little results. The right SEO strategy needs to create “value” throughout the lifetime of your online business. Is your SEO strategy the right strategy?

    2. Shooting in the dark

Most SEO experts don’t have a proper strategy in place to secure your rankings. What’s amazing is that the client feels SEO is not something they will understand, and don’t feel they need too. This means your SEO strategy could be shooting darts in the dark hoping to hit the bull’s eye. Are you aware of the SEO strategies being used on your website and do you understand them?

    3. Lack of alignment

Most SEO strategies are not consistent, lack participation and deep perspective into search engines. Many SEO experts build random links (from relevant sites) to your website which eventually does push the rankings temporarily. But if you want to build a strong link reputation and earn lifetime traffic, then alignment is a must. Is your SEO strategy in alignment with the new link variables – consistency, relevancy, diversity, progression, participation and age of links?

    4. Playing follow the leader

Most SEO strategies play follow the leader i.e. your competitors. Most clients worry too much about the competitors (and their rankings) and lesser about the “value” they are creating. A SEO strategy that focuses on chasing competitors is like a dog trying to catch its own tail. It’s always seems close, but yet the dog can never catch it. Is your SEO strategy chasing its own tail?

    5. Wrong expectations

Most SEO strategies make high claims and ranking guarantees. Most clients buy into this. The clients who buy into quick or cheap SEO schemes need to understand the expectations and deliverables properly. If you do not understand your SEO strategy, how it works and why it works, then good luck for the same. Is your SEO strategy based on wrong expectations?

    6. Chasing a dream

Most SEO strategies present the dream of tons of traffic that will come to your website. Yes, there is business that will come, but the reality is – getting business online is not always easy. It involves creating value, building a brand, communicating that brand, making the brand visible, understanding your target markets and your customer, and a long term vision. And this takes time. Is your SEO strategy chasing a dream or is grounded on reality?

    7. The bigger the better

Most SEO strategies aim to target maximum number of web, user and social communities while link building. And many clients get impressed with the big numbers. What’s to be kept in mind is that it’s not possible to participate in so many communities at the same time, and over a period of time. So bigger is not always better! Do you have a SEO strategy in place that focuses on “value and participation” rather than numbers?

    8. Forgetting the customer

Most SEO strategies are not focused on the customer. If your potential customers are not getting any “value” from your SEO strategy then you are on the path to failure. Create value – make that value visible – this will lead to conversions. Is your SEO strategy creating value for your potential customers?

    9. Are all SEO Strategies the same?

All SEO experts follow the same guidelines; however, all SEO’s don’t have the right SEO strategy in place to get you closer to your online business goals. So take your time to understand the SEO strategy you plan to implement and why you are choosing that SEO strategy over others.

    10. The wrong SEO strategy

I believe there are no wrong SEO experts, but there are SEO experts with the wrong SEO strategies. So hire the expert SEO with the right SEO strategy today!

  • How to use Paid Link Building effectively in your SEO campaign?

Date: 2010.04.23 | Category: expert seo, paid link building | Response: 0

There has been a lot of debate over the last two years on the pro’s and cons of paid link building. While I strongly believe that there is no short cut to building lasting value and relationships on the web, paid link building somehow found its way into my SEO strategies.

It all started a couple of months back. I have been a strong advocate against any paid form of link building from the very beginning and for those who have been reading my previous posts (thank you) would have noticed that. That particular day was a crucial day for me. I was scrambling on the net searching for a way to boost a certain keyword for a certain irate client.

I am sure many SEO experts who read this will be grinning ear to ear – it sounds all too familiar.
“Over the last couple of months you have been building great content focused around the keywords you have been targeting. You have been diligently syndicating that content across relevant article sites, and promoting the same across social bookmarking sites. You have been steadily getting user votes for all your content making those links permanent.

You have created a SEO strategy in tune with the new link variables – relevancy, consistency, diversity, progression, participation and age of links.

You have been varying your content each month – keeping it original, informative and entertaining. From articles, case studies, press releases, white papers, FAQ’s and how to articles, to innovative videos about your vision/ brand/ product/ services.

You have created the right syndication channels for each type of content you have been posting for optimum visibility and building quality links back to the right pages of the website.

You were also running campaigns in specific social bookmarking sites each month to boost certain keywords. For these campaigns you have been getting 12 to 15 other users to vote up/ thumbs up/ review / comment on your content making that story hot.

You have also been promoting your content across relevant social media sites. You ensure you have built a good personal and professional network around the content. And that network is growing daily.

You have also been consistently building other good links from relevant web directories, .org and .edu sites, press syndication sites, news sites, and other such sites.”

Wow, that’s sounds like there has been a lot of work that’s been done here.

So why was I scrambling for additional links and power?

Welcome to the world of the SEO expert. Even with the best of the efforts and wisest of strategies sometimes we SEO experts fall short of the promises we make. So we scramble for a new strategy, a new technique, a new website that will magically give us that additional power.

    I will Pay for Power

I used to think that sites that “sold” links would be sites that would not be able to give back any real SEO value. And plus, why the hell should I pay for links when I can build them for free. A good argument indeed!

Sometimes desperation leads to despair, and sometimes it can lead to a revelation – as it did in my case.

The 3 links that I purchased did the trick in 15 days. The rankings were up and the client was super excited and filled with renewed vigor.

Keep in mind “age” of links is an important factor in search rankings, so around 2-3 months should be given to check the value received from that link. Luckily all I needed was a boost, so 15 days did the trick.

The trick is to use it in the end

So while I will still not advise clients to pay for their links, every once in a while, I use this strategy to boost certain keyword pages. Most premium links are expensive with monthly payments to maintain those links, so be wise while choosing the links you pay for.

Two important factors for an expert seo while considering which links to buy other than page rank and cost of link – relevancy and power of local links.

The trick is to use paid link building only after around 5-6 months of implementing value based SEO strategies.

So now you can enjoy the best of both worlds!

  • Why does the SEO process take so long? Expert SEO speaks out

    Date: 2010.04.21 | Category: expert seo | Response: 0

For the first 6 months, the SEO expert works on identifying the winning keywords, implementing on-page optimization and content strategies, and building diverse quality links back to the important keyword pages on your website.

Most time consuming is the building of a solid Link Reputation by implementing a focused SEO Strategy which is in alignment with the “New Link Variables” like – Consistency, Relevancy, Diversity, Progression, Participation and Age of links.

So first ask yourself, is your SEO strategy, the right SEO strategy for
    your website?

The basic objective of any SEO strategy is to create value and then make that value “visible” across relevant and diverse web, user and social communities. Creating content and building quality links consistently to each page of your website is the most vital part of your SEO strategy ahead.

By doing so you are sharing great content with your visitors and other online communities, and in return, the sites that you are participating in allow you to build links back to the important keyword pages on your website. These links are highly valued by search engines, so it’s a win-win situation for all parties concerned – the content creator, the sites that accept content, and search engines which preferably rank content.

The types of content that is useful for SEO includes various articles, how to articles, FAQ’s, case studies, white papers, press releases, testimonials, PowerPoint presentations, photographs, videos etc , and each in turn can be used for further syndication and promotions across select and relevant communities.

There are 4 link building strategies that you can use in parallel for “value and merit” based link building:

    1. Weekly Syndication and Promotion Strategy: Write content that’s unique, informative and resourceful each week that’s focused around the keywords you are targeting. Make that content visible by syndicating that content across relevant article sites, and then promoting that content across select social bookmarking sites (with up voting of that content to ensure a permanent link). Participation in articles sites and social bookmaking sites each week allows you to create great back links (with relevant anchor text) to the important keyword pages on your website. And since these links are earned on merit of your content, these links are highly valued by search engines.

    2. Monthly Campaign Strategy: In parallel to the weekly syndication and promotion strategy, once a month you can campaign in one select social bookmarking site, and try and get max votes up/ thumbs up/ reviews/comments for your content. The more the number of users who up-vote your content, the better are the chances of the story becoming hot, and hot stories earn more votes, meaning more powerful links back to your keyword pages. Each month you can work with a different social bookmarking site (Digg, Mixx, Delicious, Yahoo Buzz etc), and get the votes up! This is a powerful strategy to boost a keyword.

    3. Progressive Link Building Strategy: While the first 2 strategies are value based and need quality content to implement, there are many other places where one can get quality links. Good sources for links include web directory submissions, PR (Press release) submissions, video submissions, blog commenting, forums posting, yahoo answers, blog reviews, .org and .edu links, three way link building etc.

    4. Social Media Strategy: Focus on a few social media sites like Linked In, FaceBook, Twitter, Squidoo, Hub Pages and build a network of business and personal contacts. Share your content with the communities you are participating in. While the SEO value here may be low as compared to the above link building strategies, networking is a great way to communicate with like minded friends and business associates.

The Right SEO Strategy Ahead will eventually enhance the website authority, link reputation, author reputation and the social reputation of your website leading to more targeted traffic and conversions on the website.

While one definitely starts seeing tangible results in the first 6 months of the SEO campaign, it will take another couple of months before the website starts dominating the Page #1 of Google search listings for many of its important keywords.

It’s around this time when you will start witnessing an increasing stream of quality traffic and a higher rate of conversion to your website, and probably not before that. Of course it’s dependent on the competition for those keywords as well.

For those who don’t have the patience to wait for around a Year, I advise you check out Adwords, Pay Per Click and other SEM campaigns that can get immediate traffic. SEM campaigns are expensive, and once the money stops, so does the traffic and business – in addition there is no lasting value built, so you should keep that in mind.

In parallel, start your SEO campaign to create lasting value for your visitors and a stream of steady customers for your website for over the years to come – What are you waiting for?

Welcome to SEO Expert Training Video Series
    By SEO Expert, Nevil Darukhanawala

In this video, I continue to talk about content and content syndication. In the last video we learnt about the different types of content that can be used for SEO purposes. Each type of content represents a community you could participate in. Eg. If you post a article it could be syndicated to article sites like ezinearticle, if you post a How to article it could be syndicated to sites like eHow, if you post a press release it could be syndicated to press syndication sites like Prweb, if you post a video it could be syndicated to video sites like YouTube and so on. You get the idea.

This helps build link diversity by participating and syndicating across various communities. Other than getting traffic and links for participating in the communities you are syndicating your content to, these links are highly valued by search engines as they have been earned on merit.

In this video, I talk on various types of content used in the Syndication and Promotion Strategy – articles, press releases, videos, how to articles, PowerPoint presentations, case studies, testimonials etc. Having different kinds of content helps build diversity in links by participating in different communities like article sites, social bookmarking, video sites, how to sites, press release sites etc and building links back to your primary keyword pages.

In this video I also introduce the Campaign Strategy (Our Second Strategy), which runs in parallel to the Weekly Syndication and Promotion Strategy. This is a monthly strategy, and is useful for powering up important keywords by boosting user votes/reviews to the content page. Search engines give a lot of importance to what the users have to say about a content page. The users acknowledge good content by voting up, thumbs up, review, commenting on social bookmarking sites like Digg, Delicious, Reddit, Mixx, Propeller, Stumble Upon etc.

  • Expert in SEO: Powering external Websites that Power your Website

Date: 2010.04.02 | Category: expert in seo | Response: 0

We all know that it’s good to build quality links to your website, including to all the web pages and blog pages under your domain. However this SEO expert strategy is focused on building links to external websites or web pages that are linking back to your website.

If a popular website or web page links back to your website or web page, it powers up that page (and keyword) on your website. We now take this a step further by building links or link power to that external website or web page that is linking to you.

Why? Because if the external page that is linking to you gets more links, it will have more power that it can pass on to your website or web page.

However don’t rush away just yet to start building links to all the websites that are linking to your website as you will end up spending a fortune and lots of time on building links for other websites.

So a good place to start would be to figure out which external websites are linking to your important keyword pages. And if these external websites or web pages are worthy of time spent building links to them.

Since link building is time consuming I like to concentrate on a few web communities that are worth the time spent.

    1. Blog review pages – Getting good Page Rank bloggers to write a review about your website, product or service is a well known SEO expert strategy. However, by building additional links to the blog review pages you can power your keyword pages even more. A tip here is to post the external blog link across a few select social bookmarking sites, and get a few users to up vote that content making it a permanent link.

    2. Profile Pages – So you have created your company profile pages in LinkedIn, Reddit, Digg, Twitter, YouTube and other such business and social networking/bookmarking communities. In the profile pages, you are allowed to link out to your website and blog. These are good power links. But, by building additional links to your external profile pages you can add the extra boost of link power back to your website.

    3. News publisher websites – Were you covered in the news lately? Or your press release was picked by online news publishers? News publisher sites have a lot of authority, and getting a link back from an authoritative source is definitely a touch cookie to crack. But if you managed to get in the news then go ahead and power up the news page that is linking back to you. A point to note is that most news publishers do not give links in their editorials, in that case don’t bother to build links to them. You could however write a neat blog post about your coverage in the news and link out to the news source, and use that blog post for further syndication, promotion, up voting and campaigning. Some gain is better than none.

Are there any more such communities which work well with this strategy? Most definitely, but a good place to start are in the ones above and as any expert in SEO would say – don’t take too much time on building links to external web pages – spent that time building links for your own website.

If you have any suggestions please write in your comment.

    Till then
